Ever wondered how
Victoria's Secret models get those gorgeous, voluminous, and sexy waves? New
York hairstylist Dominick Pucciarello (who's managed the manes of all of your
favorite Angels!) reveals the perfect technique for that signature 'Secret
style.
"Getting that perfect
Victoria's Secret wave is easier than you think," says Dominick, who's
graced Victoria's Secret's backstage more times than he can count. "I
start by blowing the hair out with a round brush. Then I heat up a 1.5" to
2" inch curling iron depending on the length of the model's hair and how
big we want the waves. [Women with shorter hair should use a smaller curling
iron, but the technique is the same]. First, I curl the front section away from
the face. Then, I curl the rest of the hair, alternating the curls towards and
away from the face to create a sexier, less uniform look. After I curl each section.
I roll them into clean pin curls and secure each roll with a clip. Usually, I
let the curls set while the models go for makeup. Once they come back—about 20
minutes later—I begin taking out the curls. As I roll out each section, I lift
the hair up and spray underneath with a texture spray for volume—Oribe Dry
Texturizing Spray is perfect for this. I'll also break up the curls with my
fingers for that beachy, tousled effect. I usually also mix a drop of Aveda Anti-Humectant
Pomade and Oribe
Créme for Style in my palms for shine and added texture. I barely use any
product though. Use creams, oils, and pomades sparingly—enough for hold, not
weight."
What's the most important
part of this look for Dominick? "It's all about the set. When you roll and
set your pin curls, make sure they're even clean and well-sectioned—really take
the time to roll neatly and accurately. The nicer the pin curl, the more
voluminous and more long-lasting your locks will stay."
